President Biden has signed an executive order requiring the Justice Department to halt contracts with private prisons. The action was put forth along with three other executive orders, all aimed to address racial inequity. In initiating the order Biden aims to “stop corporations from profiting” off of the incarcerated. Biden states the order is solely an initial step in his administration’s broad plan to tackle existing systemic issues in the U.S. criminal justice system.
